Nazario is thinking the same way Bodega thought about the neighborhood. He wants Spanish Harlem to become better than the white neighborhood. If it didn’t, Spanish Harlem would be lost. For example, “This neighborhood will be lost unless we make it ours. Look at Loisaida, that’s gone’, Nazario said. ‘All those white yuppies want to live in Manhattan and they think Spanish Harlem is next for the taking. When they start moving in...we’ll be left out cold. But if we build a strong professional class and accumulate property, we can counter that effect’...Then he smiled at me as if he had just seen the sunrise for the first time in his life. ‘And we’ll free our island, without bloodshed.”(107). This shows that Nazario is wanting Spanish Harlem only for hispanics, same as Bodega wants Spanish Harlem to be better. Of course, Nazario thinking that way can seem a bit worrying because it looks like that he and Bodega are doing this the hard way, by getting what they want. Especially when they’re doing something illegal they’ll maybe end up getting caught. Nazario is keeping many secrets and it doesn’t seem like a good sign for Chino because he wants to end on doing Bodega’s bargain.

In "Bodega Dreams", Willie Bodega has this fantastical idea of re-building Spanish Harlem with a strong professional class and out of government hands. He teams up with a lawyer, Edwin Nazzario, to do this. Bodega buys old, condemned buildings with money he makes from selling drugs and running illegal businesses and then renovates the buildings so tenants from the neighborhood can move in and pay cheap rent. Bodega also funds people's college education to build his professional class. Now building up an entire neighborhood is not just about people and money, it's about laws too so Bodega needs a lawyer. He met Nazzario when Nazzario helped him scam his way out of a 25 year prison sentence by circumventing the legal system. A man who can do that is very useful when you're trying to build up something with money obtained illegally. Edwin Nazzario is a sneaky snake but he has a way with people as well as being really cunning and smart. Quinonez writes, "He had the uncanny ability to be stoically cold under pressure and extremely warm with the people...his head was crowded with practicality and genius." The author is telling the public about how Nazzario works with the people and how he can influence people to get his way. Many people cannot function the way Nazzario does and for this he is an amazing asset and Bodega chose him for his brains and people skills.
In "Bodega Dreams" Bodega is not really such a bad man. Bodega has done some bad things that are not really good but he has also done some really good things. Bodega himself wants to do his best to make Spanish Harlem a better place. To do this Bodega has to do things to help people out. Bodega had just sent Alberto Salazar to kill because he had gotten in his way of what Bodega wants to do with the community. But does not prove that he is so bad. Chino said "Bodega took pride in helping someone who had arrived from Puerto Rico, Nicaragua or Mexico or any other Latin American country. He'd get them jobs real legal jobs" (100) This quote shows that whatever bad things Bodega does he really does it for his people. I am not saying its good for him to do it but he just wants the best for his community. I feel that to make things better Bodega should just stop doing illegal things. Bodega is making things in Spanish Harlem better.
In Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez Nazario plays a important role in El Bario. He has this capability to be loved by people. " He had the uncanny ability to be stoically cold under pressure and extremely warm with people" (page.98) This quote shows how Nazario was a very smart intelligent man who knew how to get on peoples sides by changing his attitude based on who the person was. "Who is better than Nazario to visit the people and give them help in the name of Bodega" (page.98) Thats why Bodega has Nazario to represent him in El Bario with his capability to change his attitude with anyone to make them like him.
Nazario cant be trusted because he is described like a chameleon. He is known for blending in with others. But what i think that means is that he is known to disappear whenever he wants. "Great." "I could already see that Nazario was a chameleon. He had the uncanny ability to be stoically cold under pressure and extremely warm with the people" (p.98). This shows that chino cant one hundred percent trust Nazario.
Question: Is it good to be chameleon or bad to be chameleon? In Bodega Dreams, Nazario is characterized as a chameleon man in the spanish Harlem neighborhood. His personality blends in perfectly in both worlds of poverty and high class social class. I'd say if you're a chameleon person you are good depending how you use that term. "It was Nazario who, by blending his education with politeness, had made himself be looked upon with love, respect, and little fear throughout the neighborhood." This shows that Nazario knows how to be part of the crowd no matter type of people they're.
Question: Why didn't Bodega want the man to know who he was? In Bodega Dream, Bodega didn't want to be known as Bodega when Chino introduced him to his friend on the street. ""And tell Mr. Nazario I owe Willie Bodega"" Bodega quickly motioned to me not to say a word. Not to introduce him as Willie Bodega." This shows how he doesn't want to be introduced as a Bodega so that his identity can be hidden and safe if any of the people in the neighborhood to go mad at him.
In bodega dreams chino had to get information on vera and give it back to bodega. After he had found the information he tells bodega that she is coming back to her old school because the are going to name it after her. So bodega gets ready to see her again in the school. Then he gets a little nervous and tells chino to basically be his wing man when he sees vera. But then he remembers all she has done and then bodega gets pretty upset. "You're right. Lets go see this bitch and show her what a fuken mistake she made. That bitch! That fuken, fuken bitch. Why'd she leave in the first place? She never wanted him, she always wanted me". This shows that bodega remembers that she left him for the other guy and thats why bodega gets so upset at her.
In this chapter Chino finally met Nazario and walked with him on his way to work. When Chino finally went inside his boss called out to him. He told Chino to go go because he "wasn't feeling well." Chino was confused at first but then played along with what he was saying. Slowly but surley he put the peices together that Nazario had told his boss to give him the day off. The motif to this chapter is secrets. An example would be when Chino said, " ... Because if i ask Nazario anything, he would only do that lawyer thiing on me, say a million things while telling me nothing" (pg 100). This illustrates a motif of secrets because by saying this what Chino is trying to imply is that a lawyer will say everything possible besides what you really asked.
Why didn't Willie Bodega not want El Barrito to know who he was?
Chino and Willie Bodega were walking to go to PS 72 to go see Vera, when Chino got stopped by El Barrito. He stopped and told him he had seen him with Nazario earlier in the day and that if he was ever in need of something, anything he could count on him. He then said, "And tell Mr. Nazario I owe Willie Bodega." Bodega was standing right next to Chino when this ocurred. "Bodega quickly motioned to me not to say a word. Not to introduce him as Willie Bodega." Bodega didnt want to be known because what he does is supposed to stay low. Not everyone is suppose to know him. He's a man with a lot of buisness out there and a great reputation but not all he does is good so he maintains him self out of sight.
In Bodega Dreams Chino was talking to Nazario (Bodega's lawyer) and Nazario was telling Chino on more favors that Bodega was asking for. "In real life we have to do what Willie says. He wants you to accompany him to the school this morning and see Vera. Wha! I was angry". This shows that Chino was mad because Chino was done with his part of the deal and doesnt want associate with Bodega anymore.
Add more context to support your answer. If you talk about what Chino has already done for Bodega in the story then your response will be stronger. 7/10
The narrator describe nazario as a person that could change his personality to fit the situation that he in. He adapts to environments, and only tells you what he wants you to know. A quote to show his personality is, "I could already see that nazario was a chameleon. It was nazario who, by blending his education with politeness, had made himself be looked upon with love, respect, and a little gear throughout the neighborhood. " This shows that nazario is very smart in the way that he acts and knows what he wants. Also he has things planned fromthe beginning and gets what he wants.
There was motif of secrets seen in this chapter and it was secrets being kept from Chino. He knows that he does not know everything, but he feels it is better to not know everything because he feels it is safer that way. He does not feel offended but when he wants to know something he tries to find the right people to ask, the people that would tell him the complete truth. A piece of evidence is, "right then I wanted nazario to level with me. But I decided to wait and ask Bodega himself, because if i asked nazario anything, he would only do that lawyer thing on me, say a million things while telling me nothing. " This shows the way that things are being kept from Chino and that there are probably other secrets and things that he doesn't know about.
Nazario is describe as a chameleon because in the story it show how Chino describe Nazario by describing his eyes as a black hole, also he had made himself be looked upon with love, respect, and not that much fear around the neighborhood. Nazario help around by carrying favor for Bodega around the neighborhood, and he was describe as a man who wen around the neighborhood helping others by the name of Bodega. In the story chino say's, "I could already see that Nazario was a chameleon. He had the uncanny ability to be stoically cold under pressure and extremely warm with people. But from the day I'd met him at the Taino Towers I knew it was Nazario who went around carrying out the favors for Bodega." In this quote, Chino say's that Nazario was a man who were describe as a Chameleon because he is always doing favors for Bodega around the neighborhood. Also he was describe as a man who has his eyes as a black hole. On the other hand he had made himself be looked upon with love and respect around the neighborhood.
Explain how these different pieces of evidence (his eyes, his respect in the neighbhorhood, his description as a chameleon) characterize him. You just list these examples but don't pick an adjective to characterize him as a person. Analyze these quotes by explaining what they mean. 7/10
Why didn't Bodega want Chino to introduce the man to him as Willie Bodega?
Bodega did not want Chino to introduce him as Willie Bodega infront of the man for a specific reason. When Bodega and Chino were walking in the streets, a man stopped chino and said to tell Bodega thank you for what he has done. Chino introduced himself and was about to introduce Willie but was stopped by willie with a motion of his hand which meant that he did not want to introduce himself as willie bodega. The book states "and tell Mr.nazario i owe Willie Bodega. Bodega quickly motioned to me not to say a word. Not to introduce him as Willie Bodega. Then as the text goes on it says "i know what you're thinkin', Bodega said, But if u see God he won't seem that powerful anymore." This peice of evidence shows that Bodega does not want to be seen by people in the streets because he want people to stay curious about who this misterious man is. He thinks that if people find out who he is then, he will loose a lot of his powerful and not seem so powerful anymore.

ReplyDeleteNazario is thinking the same way Bodega thought about the neighborhood. He wants Spanish Harlem to become better than the white neighborhood. If it didn’t, Spanish Harlem would be lost.
